Delaware and the slaves

Posted in Newark by Ulf on February 9, 2009

delaware_und_die_sklavenIn our foyer here in Delaware there is a picture on the wall. It shows two black men who take care of the horses for a noble-looking white man and a girl, perhaps his daughter.

This reminds me of Delaware’s history as a slave state. Although most slavery was abolished in Delaware in the beginning of the 19th century, there was no law prohibiting it. Delaware is a southern state, but we still fought for the Union in the Civil War. Even some of our slaves did.

The first state can’t just leave the Union ;-).
