What’s happening in the Bundesliga?

Posted in Europe by Ulf on March 12, 2009

What’s up with the Bundesliga? Berlin is in the lead, but directly behind them there are four teams with exactly the same number of points! Unfortunately, Munich is among them. Three out of these four teams even have the same goal difference. And two of them even have the same absolute numbers of scored and received goals.

You’ll notice that these two teams, Munich and Hoffenheim, are both ranked second in the table above (from sport.de). I think this is not correct since there are a few more tiebreakers in the Bundesliga rules:

  1. Number of points from victories (worth +3) and draws (+1).
  2. Goal difference for the entire season.
  3. Total goals scored in the season.
  4. Head-to-head results (total points).
  5. Head-to-head goal difference.
  6. Head-to-head away goals scored.
  7. Total away goals scored during the entire season.
  8. The result of a tiebreaker match at a neutral site.

And since Munich defeated Hoffenheim in early December 2008, only Munich should be second and Hoffenheim should therefore be third.

If only Werder and Hannover would do a better job in this season… Still, Hamburg still has good chances of winning the championship and either Hamburg or Bremen will go to the cup final in Berlin!

Ulf ist ein jahrelanger Bayern München Fan. Jetzt versucht er sich zu distanzieren, aber ich weiß, wem ich die Bayern-München-Fan-Servietten geklaut habe!
