52 States in 8 Months

Why the light?

Posted in Newark by Ulf on April 20, 2009

When I went to the swimming pool on Tuesday evening1, I walked across some parking lot. At the exit they have some barrier with a machine to put your parking ticket in. Nothing special so far. But look at the bottom edge of this machine. It is lit inside!

So why on earth would somebody put a light into such a machine? It can’t be a thief who digged a tunnel since nobody puts money into machine. The only real explanation I can make up is once again very American:

When they built this machine, they screwed up the electronics. Then they figured out that it’s cheaper to pay somebody who sits inside this machine, checks the parking tickets and then opens the boom. And to make it more comfortable inside, they installed a bulb. I tried to talk to the man inside the machine, but he didn’t answer. I think I know why: Most no-well-paid jobs in the US are done by Afroamericans. And I have trouble talking to many Afroamericans since they talk some hiphopish dialect. So I guess the men inside the machine simply didn’t understand me.

This explanation has one weak point: Most Americans simpliy will not fit into this machine. Especially if they have to share the space with a light bulb.

1As there is snow on the picture, you can guess that this was already a while back ;-).
